Captain Jack and Charlotte's Trail of History

One new way Charlotte is trying to bring more attention to its rich history is through a project known as The Trail of History. The plan calls for the placement of twenty or more bronze statues of historical figures from Charlotte's past that would be placed along the soon to be completed Sugar Creek Greenway. The signature feature of the project will be a large monument to Captain James Jack which is expected to be completed by May of 2010. Captain Jack was a captain in the local militia who was chosen to carry a copy of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, often known as Mec Dec, to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. While some question the validity of the document, there is no controversy about the Captain Jack part of the story, which is well established. The only controversy involves which document Captain Jack had with him on his daring trip to Philadelphia. Some believe it was another bold document, known as the Mecklenburg Resolves. Either way it's a fantastic story and Captain Jack is a worthy choice for such a monument. After the war, James Jack eventually moved to Georgia and lived to be 91 years old.
